Biography
Bernard Hon, Chief Professor of Advanced Manufacturing Technology at the University of Liverpool, UK, is an internationally renowned scholar in the field of manufacturing systems engineering. He is currently the Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Systems Laboratory at the University of Liverpool, UK, Senior Advisor to the UK Government in the field of manufacturing, Senior Member of CIRP for Manufacturing Science and Technology, Senior Member of the International Society for Engineering and Technology, Council Member, International Council for Sustainable Manufacturing Science and Engineering. Research interests includes advanced manufacturing technology and sustainable manufacturing technology. He has published three monographs and more than 120 academic papers with research funding of more than 10 million pounds. He has been awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professorship for six times and the Royal Academy of Engineering Distinguished International Fellow for two times.

Abstract
Industrial sustainability is a complex issue that requires the balancing of economic, environmental, and social factors in the course of development from a simple process to the whole planet. Instead of tackling industrial sustainability from a multi-dimensional approach, a significant amount of progress can be made by simpler approaches. One simple and powerful approach is lightweighting which will improve both material and energy efficiency simultaneously. This presentation will describe some methods that could be applied for lightweighting in engineering design supported by cases and examples.
